This Breath is a creative response to a moment in time—this moment in time—by young people living in regional South Australia. An opportunity to reflect and to capture what has been for many a difficult time to breathe—whether it was mass bushfires, #blacklivesmatter, COVID or the ongoing climate crisis, the past two years will continue to shape the future of young people for decades to come.

These 9 writers were selected from across regional South Australian through an open call out by Writers SA. Each writer was supported by the Writers SA regional team and professional mentors to craft and polish their words.

This digital showcase with National Young Writers Festival brings those words to you, wherever you are. Breathe them in.Featuring:

Tayla Clarke – It Just Keeps Slipping Away (Port Augusta)
Sarah Herrmann – We’ll Fly (Someday) (Saddleworth)
Isaac Goosay – Solace in the Sacred Cloth (Streaky Bay)
Britnie Hocking – Breathe In (Renmark)
Poppy Moyle-Read – How It Used To Be (Padthaway)
Josh King – Five Blues for Breathing (Mount Gambier)
Maddy Nyp – I Hear This World is Ending (Highland Valley)
Jessica Weidenhofer – Survival of the Dissociative Mind (Barmera)
Anika Parenta – This Little Town (Port Lincoln)

Presented in partnership with SA Writers Centre.

Support NYWF
The National Young Writers’ Festival is a non-profit organisation made by and for young artists to help foster a sense of community and allow young writers to connect, share skills and hone their craft. We pride ourselves on paying all writers programmed for the festival but we are reliant on government funding and philanthropic support to make our festival happen. Your donation allows us to continue supporting young artists, increase the number of writers we are able to program, and improve our capacity and resources to hold high quality events.

NYWF is a registered non-profit, so your donation (above $2) is also tax-deductible.
