It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a team of awesome people and the financial support of many kind individuals and organisations to put on the National Young Writers’ Festival. If you’d like to help out, we’d love to hear from you. Here’s how you can help:

In 2017-2018, on our 20th Birthday, we are making a special call-out to our wonderful alumni, artists, supporters and audiences, to put a dollar sign on your love for the festival.

It’s a critical time for the festival to grow and it’s your generosity that can help us plan sustainably for the future NYWF that we dream about each day; better, more innovative, diverse and accessible for our artists and audiences. Our campaign is now live, if you are able to make a contribution please consider doing so, here, in honour of the last 20 years and in anticipation of the next!

We are a not-for-profit, entirely volunteer organisation, with DGR status registered with the NSW Department of Fair Trading. All monies raised go towards making a bigger, better festival. All donations over AUD $2 are tax deductible.

For further details about other ways to donate or show your support, please contact our Festival Chair at

What’s better than all the cute bodies at the festival?! Those cute bodies rocking our cute 20th anniversary merch! You can find our festival tees and totes downstairs at Royal Exchange Friday and Saturday from 10am – 5pm and at the Zine Fair on Sunday.

Tees: $30

Totes: $20

People who help people the National Young Writers’ Festival are the luckiest people in the world.

This year’s NYWF is set to be an amazing maze of panels, readings, debates and special events geared to be the biggest and best boot camp for young writers in Australia.

You don’t need any special skills or experience to volunteer – just enthusiasm and the willingness to lend us your time. You’ll need to get yourself to Newcastle for the festival (28 Sept – 1 Oct) and find yourself a place to sleep, and in return you’ll be part of making NYWF as awesome as possible.

You’ll meet some incredible people, get a wicked t-shirt, see a bunch of great events and gain experience into the inner workings of the festival. In 2017 we’re also hoping to provide mentorship in any way we can. Previous volunteers have come back as festival artists and staff, so this could be the start of a beautiful, ongoing friendship.

Interested? Flick an email to with your age, phone number, and you too could climb aboard the good ship NYWF. Toot toot!
