You stand in a circle with thirty other people. A poem is passed around the circle and each person reads one line out loud: “Let the girl dawdling home from her trumpet lesson” – “pause at the half-built house on the corner” — “where the newly installed maze of plumbing comes down to one little pipe whose open end she can reach’ – “so she takes a deep breath” – “and makes the whole house sound.” Poetry Circle is a collaborative reading experience designed to give the audience the chance to understand the sonics of poetry experientially. The event will begin with a workshop on the sonics of poetry lead by poet Tina Huang exploring assonance, consonance, sonic ghosts, and the use of fast, slow, hard, and soft sounds. The event will culminate in the audience collaboratively performing three poems.
